Lake Mývatn

This tour combines Lake Mývatn with the legendary Góðafoss waterfall. Both places are classics and among the most popular destinations in the north of Iceland.

The waterfall Góðafoss has played an important role in the transition from the Norse Mythology to Christianism. And Lake Mývatn is known for its diversity of landscapes. Here we have all sorts of lava formations and geothermal phenomena in a fairytail like setting.

During the summer both Góðafoss and Lake Mývatn can be quite busy, but we always try to keep away from the crowds. And if you like hiking, we take you on beautiful trails where few people go. During winter time, when the lake is frozen and the volcanoes are covered in snow, it often feels as if we are alone in this winter wonderland.

Tour description:

After the pick-up we drive allong the scenic coastline of Eyjafjörður and leave the fjord over the Vikurskarð mountainpass. It is not a long, but a beautiful ride to Góðafoss. We take plenty of time to visit the waterfall of the gods and explore its surroundings. Then we drive on to Lake Mývatn, where we spend most of the day. Because of Lake Mývatns location right on the rift zone, this region is very active and full of contrasts.  The lake is surrounded by three table mountains that were formed by eruptions under Ice Age glaciers. Thousands of years later younger eruptions changed the outlines of the lake into the magical landscapes we will be driving and walking through. Our guide will tell you everything you want to know about the geology, history and culture of this beautiful region.

At the lake side we will stop to see the  Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters and tell you why Mars geologists research this extraordinary place. In Dimmuborgir we will hike and get lost in a labyrinth of troll like lava sculptures. At the Grjótagjá Rift we will witness how the North-American and Eurasian tectonic plates are actively spreading apart. And at Hverir you will see the most amazing geothermal area where steam is coming out of the ground at high pressure and mudpools are boiling relentlesly with the multicolored Námafjall on the background.

If you wish we can add a visit to the Nature Baths, a moonlike spa at the heart of the Mývatn area.
